Description
It was not just in the major trade centers but also in the expanse of the "Hinterland" that the foreign and the exotic made themselves felt in the age of Enlightenment - be it in the form of missionaries from China, galley slaves from North Africa, or "Turks" from the Ottoman Empire. These essays take a systematic approach to ask how knowledge from the wider world made its way to the villages and supposed peripheries of Europe.

Description
While the economic involvement of early modern Germany in slavery and the slave trade is increasingly receiving attention, the direct participation of Germans in human trafficking remains a blind spot in historiography. This edited volume focuses on practices of enslavement taking place within German territories in the early modern period as well as on the people of African, Asian, and Native American descent caught up in them.
