Description
Composers of spiritual songs in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, including the Monk of Salzburg, Oswald von Wolkenstein, Heinrich Laufenberg, and Sebastian Brant, engaged productively with the tradition of Latin hymns and sequences. This volume collects thirteen studies on songs by these and other composers who stood at the intersection between liturgy and the vernacular.

Description
Despite their rich tradition, the Carmina Anacreontea transmitted in the Palatine Anthology have received little scholarly attention. This neglect is linked to questions concerning their authenticity. Long read as poems by the ancient lyricist Anacreon, they are now regarded instead as imitations of Anacreontic lyricism. This volume presents the latest findings on the language, poetology, tradition, and reception of this lyrical collection.

Description
The anthology, which is the result of an interdisciplinary conference in Munich, looks at medieval lyric poetry from a European perspective. It examines the points of contact, as well as differences, between the poetry of different vernacular languages in the spectrum of genres and makes references to ancient poetry as well as to the Song of Songs. It also sees itself as a contribution to a historicization of lyric theory.
