Description
The first two editions of Atlas of Cardiac Surgical Techniques were very well received, giving trainees as well as veteran surgeons an up-to-date reference on how established technical masters perform select--and often complex--cardiac operations. The Pearls and Pitfalls Section at the end of each chapter also gives clinically important details that may be missing in other textbooks, allowing cardiac surgeons to benefit from the years of experience of established experts--many of whom developed the operations they are describing. As such, we were especially pleased when asked to prepare the third edition of this successful atlas. Many new techniques have developed or evolved since the publication of the first and second atlases, and all sections were thoroughly updated. Several chapters were completely rewritten by new authors, not because the authors of the previous chapters did not do an excellent job but to give a novel perspective on the latest surgical treatment of those cardiovascular conditions. In addition, four new chapters were added, including Technical Considerations in Redo Cardiac Surgery, Surgery and Endovascular Techniques for Acute Pulmonary Embolism, Diversity Considerations in the Practice of Adult Cardiac Surgery, and Tips and Tricks in the Acquisition of Technical Skills in Adult Cardiac Surgery. Minimally invasive techniques in coronary artery surgery and in aortic and mitral valve surgery also receive a great emphasis in this new edition. As per previous editions, the treatment of aortic disease is covered extensively. Although the purpose of the atlas is not to give an exhaustive description of all cardiac operations, those that are commonly performed are described in sufficient detail to allow young surgeons to learn the techniques and help established surgeons refine their methods according to experts in the field. We, the editors of this Atlas of Cardiac Surgical Techniques, are deeply indebted to our mentors, team members, surgical colleagues and, of course, to our patients. We hope the third edition of this atlas will honor the legacy of our teachers and be as well received as the first two editions.
