Die Beiträge erfassen bildliche Ausdrucksformenprähistorischer, vorderasiatischer, minoischer undmykenischer, griechisch-römischer und südamerikanischerKulturen als Bestandteile ihres architektonischen oder naturräumlichen Kontextes. Dabei stehen die gesellschaftlichenWirkungsmöglichkeiten des Mediums 'Bild' im Mittelpunkt.Bildwerke sind keine bloßen Objekte der Betrachtung; siebesitzen unmittelbaren Einfluss auf Wahrnehmungs- undHandlungsweisen. Als Elemente alltäglicher oder zeremoniellgegliederter Bewegungen gestalten sie Räume - privateRäume ebenso wie öffentliche, Städte, Häuser und Palästeebenso wie Landschaften. Ziel des Bandes ist es, diese Bild- und Raumkonzeptionen mit methodischen Ansätzen aus denBildwissenschaften zu analysieren.

Images are more than just objects to be observed. In all periods they have had a direct influence on the way we perceive things and act, in particular in the course of ceremonies. In this volume, various archaeological disciplines consider a number of case studies of the relationships between works of art, spaces and actions in past cultures - including the Nasca-Palpa glyphs in South America, the Stone Age site of Göbekli Tepe, Minoan and Mycenaean palaces, and Greek and Roman towns. The aim is to develop a new methodical approach to the power and effect of works of art.
