The unification of Europe is a peerless success story. It also always had crises, from which the European project emerged with new strength. In the current financial and sovereign debt crisis, this seems to have changed. Now, many see the project itself as being at stake. The contributions to this volume recapitulate decisive driving forces and stages from the history of the project of European unification, and they illuminate central aspects of the current situation in Europe. This volume also outlines ways of renewal and continuation of the European project.
