The purpose of the Guide is to provide rational advice to help selection of the most appropriate drug from those listed in the BNF. It is particularly for new prescribers and those prescribing outside their speciality. It is inot intended for this guide to dictate individual patient management or drug treatment but to assist in the decision making process. This guide should encourage safe, effective and economic prescribing and remove the need to stock a wide range of drugs. It will not replace the BNF, but hose areas covered should provide sufficient information for the guide to be used alone. Recommendations are based on clinical evidence of efficacy and the opinions of local specialists.
