Description
In the MRCS Examination, candidates are required to demonstrate sound understanding of pertinent basic physiological sciences and the application of these principles in the management of critically ill surgical patients. Currently, the candidates are assessed by a series of manned OSCE stations, whereby all aspects of applied surgical sciences and critical care is appraised face‐to‐face with an examiner. This component may make up to about 16-22% of the overall marks in the exam. The stations are marked against a set of criteria that takes into consideration the „Knowledge Broad Content Area‟ – Interpretation of Clinical Data, Interpretation of Visual and Laboratory Data and Critical Care Management. The domains tested in the applied surgical sciences and critical care component include: (i) Clinical knowledge and its application (ii) Clinical and technical skill, and (iii) Professionalism including decision making, problem solving, situational awareness and judgement, organisation and planning patient safety. In this book, each clinical scenario and its questions/answers are presented in the same format as candidates will be tested in the exam. It provides a clinical scenario/setting followed by a structured OSCE-style question and answer based discussion complemented by relevant tables, text boxes and illustrations. The scenarios take in consideration the "Knowledge Broad Content Area‟ and the domains as tested in the exam. With over 360 questions spread amongst 47 clinical scenarios (34 stems), this book in intended to be a valuable companion for those appearing for the MRCS OSCE in one of the UK Surgical Royal Colleges, as well as similar examinations elsewhere in the world.
